The party design you choose will set the mood for your event. Find out the latest, greatest, and most affordable party planning ideas to wow your guests.

Whether your event planning centers around a beautiful reception hall or your own backyard, you can make your party "talk-of-the-town" fabulous by creating atmosphere—and food presentation—that are spectacular.

Here, from top event planners, are sizzling hot tips to help make your next party spectacular.

Bold, beautiful color

Color is totally in, says Lexye Aversa, founder of Professional Touch International, a global event planner in Palm Beach. "But what's trendy is not one particular color, but the drama you create with color," she says.

Aversa says combining colors is especially appealing right now. "It's about combining colors that you wouldn't necessarily have seen in the past." An example, she notes, might be pairing teal tablecloths with hot magenta centerpieces.

"Today's colors are vivid and bold," adds Judy Komson, owner of Table Wraps, in Jericho, New York. "Flashy, prismatic hues definitely have made their comeback."

Dramatic Lighting

Dramatic Lighting

"Dramatic lighting" is also very big right now, and very effective. Instead of pin-spotting every table, "it's all about creating drama," explains Lexye Aversa, of Professional Touch International, in Palm Beach. "You want something that takes your breath away."

Think sleek and modern, says Aversa. "The Art-deco, South Beach look is hot with, perhaps, tables lit from the bottom and a glass bar," she says. The idea is to create a club feel and a minimalist look, she explains.

Illuminated bars are definitely in, says Laura Wootton, sales manager of Glen Cove-based Elegant Affairs, in Glen Cove, New York. Lighted bars also are part of the sleek look that's very trendy right now. Ironically, she notes, requests for simple yet dramatic effects can often mean greater expense. "Less really can be more in terms of cost," says Wootton.

At the other end of the dramatic lighting spectrum are candles. Candlelight is also very popular, and "pillar candles are especially big," notes Aversa. Candles of all different heights, glittery candle holders and candelabras are especially trendy in event design, she says. And candles can provide a lot of drama for relatively little cost.

Clever new cocktail parties

When it comes to food, the club ambience is as evident as it is in lighting design. Laura Wootton, sales director of Elegant Affairs, in Glen Cove, New York, reports that her company is seeing a trend toward much longer cocktail hours.

"Instead of the 2-hour cocktail party followed by a buffet or sit-down dinner, we are doing 4-hour cocktail parties," she says.

Hosts often favor marrying a 2-hour cocktail time with 2 hours of passed mini-meals. "Mini meals are more substantial hor d'oeuvres like filet mignon and garlic mashed potatoes." The trendy kicker: The food is served in a martini glass or in a Chinese take-out box," she says. That allows guests to remain standing while they're eating.
